I was not born a gifted singer. While I had always been a passionate performer, I still frequently had trouble with range, power and breaks in my voice, even after being voice major in college. While I had a good career going as a singer and teacher, I knew I could still improve myself. I decided to investigate singers that I admired and who, if any they took vocal lessons from.
I discovered a special set of vocal exercises and techniques from an older gentlemen who was a legendary voice teacher in Los Angeles, CA. He was Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban and numerous other famous singer's personal voice teacher. Simultaneously, I discovered a celebrity vocal coach in Nashville, TN who teaches Taylor Swift, Hayley Williams (Paramore) and Keith Urban. I found out that he used they same incredible techniques that the older gentlemen did and actually studied under him for many years. I figured they must be onto something, so I made it my musical mission to learn everything I could about this amazing method of singing.
I traveled regularly to California and Tenessee so I could personally witness and study everything about a way of singing that was as easy as speaking. My own voice almost immediately increased from a range of three octaves to five octaves with no breaks or cracks anywhere. I had always considered myself a bartitone singer, but the tenor and even soprano range became comfortable for me.
I started to incorporate the new techniques I had learned into my own teaching and sure enough my students started seeing phenomonal progress. In what used to take years to learn with traditional vocal instruction, my students were improving faster than ever, in weeks or months. Now it's not uncommon for a student of mine to increase their range one full octave within the first few weeks of lessons. Within months their breaks start disappearing, the tone richens and they develop an sense of power that most singers only dream about.
Perhaps you've seen an ad for a music teacher that says they teach guitar, piano, saxophone, violin, drums and/or voice. How can they truly be great at all those? There is only one thing I specialize in teaching here at SRVS, which is how to become a great singer.
